Shale Gas Resource Development Report Released

August 12, 2011

The Natural Gas Subcommittee of the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board on August 11, 2011 released its report on the responsible development of shale gas resources. The seven-member subcommittee, which includes Analysis Group Managing Principal Susan F. Tierney, was charged with examining ways to improve the safety and environmental performance of shale gas extraction processes (hydraulic fracturing) and to ensure the protection of public health and safety. Among the recommendations in the 40-page report are calls for stricter protections against emissions associated with hydraulic fracturing that may negatively affect air and water quality; and calls for more transparency—for example, full disclosure of the chemicals companies are using in the drilling process, and the creation of a national database of public information on shale gas.
