Summary of Experience

Professor Feldstein is an expert in health care economics. He has written numerous articles concerning the economics of hospitals, productivity and effectiveness in health care, and the direction of the U.S. medical care system. Among his six books are Health Care Economics (6th edition, 2004), one of the most widely used texts on health economics; Health Policy Issues: An Economic Perspective on Health Reform (3rd edition, published in 2003); and The Politics of Health Legislation: An Economic Perspective (second edition revised, 2001), which uses economic analysis to explain the outcome of health legislation in terms of the interest groups affected. Professor Feldstein has also worked at the Office of Management and Budget, Social Security Administration, and the World Health Organization. He has been a consultant to many government and private health agencies, an expert witness on health antitrust issues, and served on the board of Sutter Health, a large not-for-profit health care organization. He is currently on the board of directors of two publicly traded companies, Province Healthcare, a for-profit hospital company, and Odyssey Healthcare, a hospice company. Professor Feldstein's current research focuses on the reasons that employees switch health plans, a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and on measuring health plan performance by examining breast cancer outcomes (stage at detection, treatment type, and survival) by each type of plan.
