An expert in transfer pricing and the valuation of intangible assets, Professor Sarin has performed transfer pricing analyses for more than a dozen Fortune 500 companies, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and numerous state and federal tax agencies. His work has included delivering expert testimony in federal and state courts, and participating in audit and appeals proceedings.
Professor Sarin has prepared analyses for tax documentation for diversified multinationals in the pharmaceutical/medical devices, computer hardware/software, retail, manufacturing, and entertainment industries, and also has consulted for financial institutions, the Big Four accounting firms, and government agencies in the United States and Canada. In these engagements, Professor Sarin has established arm's length transfer pricing payments, made determinations of economic substance/business purpose, analyzed various aspects of the financial and securities markets, and performed valuations of subsidiaries and intangible assets.
In one matter on behalf of the IRS, Professor Sarin analyzed the intracompany pricing policies of a global pharmaceutical company, including identifying sources of value in the pharmaceutical industry; estimating the appropriate returns for manufacturing, marketing, and research and development activities; and identifying valuable intangible assets and assessing their relative contribution to company profits. Professor Sarin also has analyzed transfer pricing issues for state tax authorities. Additionally, he has worked on behalf of corporate taxpayers with multi-state operations, including estimating the appropriate pricing for services provided by a major retailer to its subsidiaries operating in other states.
Professor Sarin has conducted extensive research on issues regarding intangible assets valuation, business valuation, international finance, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions. His book Foundations of Multinational Financial Management focuses on the financial management of global enterprises.
