Summary of Experience

Professor Stern is an expert in labor and health economics, mental health, long-term care, industrial organization, and econometrics. He has served as an expert in court proceedings on unfair labor practices, medical malpractice, and age discrimination, and as an expert for the Social Security Administration and the National Institute of Health. Professor Stern has been deposed and testified multiple times, and has also consulted for many private and government clients in the United States. He has authored reports on the supply and demand of nurse anesthetists for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, costs and benefits of mental health care for the Charlottesville-Albemarle Commission on Children and Families, and state differences in the vocational rehabilitation experiences of youth with disabilities for the Social Security Administration. Professor Stern has published articles in top peer-reviewed journals, including Econometrica, the Review of Economic Studies, the International Economic Review, the Journal of Economic Literature, the Journal of Human Resources, the Journal of Labor Economics, Management Science, and Transportation Research, and his research has been cited over 1,000 times. Prior to joining Stony Brook, he was the Merrill Bankard Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia.
