Summary of Experience

Dr. Carls specializes in the application of statistics and econometrics to health strategy and research. She has experience in health and natural resource settings consulting to large employers; pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device makers; government agencies; insurance companies; and provider organizations. She has extensive experience leading teams using large administrative health care claims databases to conduct health economics outcomes research and evaluate employer health, wellness, and disease management programs. Dr. Carls also has experience with non-market valuation techniques, including experimental methods and surveys as well as analyses of actual choices. She has performed systematic literature reviews and cost-burden of illness studies. Dr. Carls's other research interests include geographic variation in health care spending, the impact of health care policy changes, and program evaluation methodology.

Dr. Carls's work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at professional conferences. She is a member of the International Health Economists Association, the American Society of Health Economists, and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. Prior to joining Analysis Group, Dr. Carls was a senior research leader and economist at Truven Health Analytics and an economist at Research Triangle Institute, RTI-Health Solutions, and Triangle Economic Research.
