Summary of Experience:

Dr. Hsu advises corporations and law firms on a broad spectrum of litigation and strategic issues. He has been engaged on varied business litigation cases including breach-of-contract, securities fraud, and patent infringement disputes. He has testified as an expert in the California Superior Court and in arbitration proceedings on commercial damages issues. Recently, he was the case manager in ICO Global Communications (Holdings) Limited’s breach of contract lawsuit against Boeing Satellite Systems International, Inc. ICO Global obtained a jury verdict of over $600 million in compensatory and punitive damages, the largest total award in 2008. Dr. Hsu assisted Monsanto Company in its defense of alleged patent infringement over recombinant DNA technology. Monsanto secured a settlement that was substantially less than the damages asserted by the plaintiffs. He was the case manager in the Bancorp Services v. Hartford Life Insurance litigation where the jury awarded compensatory damages of $118 million for the misappropriation of trade secrets.  The jury award is the second highest for intellectual property cases in the U.S. for 2002.  Dr. Hsu also has managed securities litigation cases and estimated Section 11 and 10b-5 securities trading damages on behalf of defendant parties.

Dr. Hsu also consults with utilities and power generators in the energy industry on portfolio risk management strategy and valuation matters pertaining to physical and financial assets. He is one of the first practitioners to apply the spark spread option concept in valuing natural gas power plants. Dr. Hsu has published numerous articles on power asset valuation, energy price risk management, and transmission pricing, and has presented his research at industry conferences.
