Analysis Group Research on the Impact of Proposed EU Data Protection Regulation Presented in Brussels

May 22, 2013

Research conducted by a team from Analysis Group on the impact of proposed EU data protection regulation was presented on May 16, 2013, at a conference cosponsored by the Progressive Policy Institute and the Lisbon Council in Brussels. The research was funded by Google and undertaken by a team including Managing Principal Lau Christensen, Manager Greg Rafert, Andrea Colciago of the University of Milan, Bicocca, and Federico Etro of Ca' Foscari University, Venice. The study, "The Impact of the Data Protection Regulation in the E.U.," quantifies the impact of proposed data protection regulation in the European Union on both small- and medium-sized enterprises in the region, and on the broader EU economy. It finds that information-intensive enterprises are likely to incur significant costs in complying with the regulation, and that those costs are likely to result in fewer small- and medium-sized enterprises and lower levels of employment in the EU. The research was also presented to members of the European Parliament by Mr. Colciago.
