Managing Principal Alan White Speaks on the Economics of Opioid Abuse at Annual RADARS System Scientific Meeting

Analysis Group Managing Principal Alan White outlined a payer perspective on opioid abuse at the annual Researched Abuse, Diversion, and Addiction-Related Surveillance (RADARS) System Scientific Meeting in the Washington, D.C. area on April 18, 2013. The meeting of prescription drug experts, as well as pharmaceutical, medical, and regulatory representatives, focused on discussions of prescription drug abuse.

In the presentation "Opioid Abuse: Financial Implications of Abuse Deterrent Formulations," Dr. White discussed the economic impact of the growing prevalence of opioid misuse, and explored the financial implications of possible solutions. "Opioid abuse imposes substantial costs to payers at both the patient and societal levels," Dr. White explained. "However, there are several ways to address this issue, including the development of opioids designed to deter abuse, and the early identification of patients who may be at risk."
