Summary of Experience
Professor Phelan is an empirical microeconomist with expertise in labor economics, demographics, and applied econometrics. His research has investigated trends and outcomes in the low-wage labor market, including wage growth, prevalence of discrimination, importance of job amenities, and disruptive effects of automation technology. He has also analyzed the impact of occupational licensing on the labor market outcomes of health care workers and the quality of services provided. Professor Phelan’s research has been published in the Journal of Labor Economics, The Economic Journal, and The Review of Economics and Statistics, among others. He is a research fellow at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and was an affiliated scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics. He has received multiple teaching awards.
