Summary of Experience
Professor Carrier's research interests lie in the areas of antitrust, patent, and copyright law. He has addressed many of the legal, policy, and business-related issues at the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property involving smartphones, patent assertion entities (patent “trolls”), new technologies, the music industry, and pharmaceutical competition. He recently applied his insights to a case involving alleged patent infringement. Working with Analysis Group consultants, he assessed the role of patents in promoting innovation and competition.
Professor Carrier has written about standards and reasonable licensing (FRAND) terms and has examined investigations into large patent portfolio acquisitions. He recently wrote “Patent Assertion Entities: Six Actions the Antitrust Agencies Can Take” and Innovation for the 21st Century: Harnessing the Power of Intellectual Property and Antitrust Law. He is the editor of Critical Concepts in Intellectual Property Law: Competition. He is also the author of 45 book chapters and law review articles in journals that include Stanford Law Review, Michigan Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and Duke Law Journal.
Professor Carrier has been quoted in leading media outlets around the world, including Bloomberg, CNBC.com, CNNMoney, Forbes, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. His scholarship has been cited in courts including the US Supreme Court. He is a past chair of the Executive Committee of the Antitrust and Economic Regulation section of the Association of American Law Schools.
