Analysis Group Collaborates with Haiti’s GHESKIO Research and Treatment Facility on Six Pro Bono HIV/AIDS Treatment Studies Presented at the AIDS 2020: Virtual Conference

December 1, 2020

Analysis Group presented six pro bono studies at the 23rd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2020: Virtual), the world’s largest AIDS conference. All six were undertaken in conjunction with GHESKIO, a research, treatment, and training facility in Haiti, and Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The studies related to research done in Haiti, and focused on HIV/AIDS treatment issues in developing nations. Study abstracts by team members including President Pierre Cremieux and Senior Analysts Ricky Berman, Iryna Bocharova, Angela Dai, Catherine Nguyen, and Johnny Wu were published in the AIDS 2020 Abstract Book, and they focus on the following topics of study:

  • HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) in Haiti: Impact on future guidelines (with the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City, and the Mexican National Institutes of Health)
  • High rates of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) resistance in children and adolescents in Haiti: Impact on future treatment options (with the Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City, and the Center for Global Health at Weill Cornell Medical College)
  • Sub-optimal outcomes with switching to zidovudine vs. recycling tenofovir in second-line treatment in Haiti
  • Sensitivity and specificity of Xpert Ultra and predictive value of symptoms of tuberculosis in patients newly diagnosed with HIV (with Florida International University and Cornell University)
  • Effect of dolutegravir on weight in persons living with HIV in Haiti
  • Dramatic effect of massive dolutegravir implementation on virologic suppression rates at the largest HIV care center in Haiti

GHESKIO (the Haitian Group for the Study for Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections) was founded in 1982 in response to Haiti’s AIDS epidemic. Since then, it has expanded its mission to include maternal and child health, family planning, adolescent health, sanitation, cancer screening, vaccinations, and vocational and microcredit programs for AIDS/TB patients and others. Analysis Group has offered pro bono medical services research in numerous GHESKIO projects since 2012.
