Understanding the Challenges of Alternative Energy Structures

Analysis Group has helped a number of clients develop strategies for alternative energy businesses. One area of ongoing interest has been fuel cells and the hydrogen economy. We recently helped a client with strong hydrogen technology and gas handling capabilities to evaluate potential future scenarios.

While a material shift toward a "hydrogen economy" is likely decades in the future, we helped the client identify the viable businesses that could be established today, with an eye toward businesses that create meaningful options for the future. We began by assessing the current state of the fuel cell value chain, identifying the most likely near- and longer-term applications for the technology, and locating the most difficult and important technical and business hurdles preventing adoptions. Based on this industry assessment and forecast, we mapped the most important gaps against our client's capabilities to identify a series of potential new business ventures, which were prioritized based on potential economic risk.
