Telehealth Growth Trends Highlight Emerging Risks

Law360, June 14, 2021

Managing Principal Brad Rice and Associate John Kumcu coauthored an article for Law360 with Dr. Lisa Rotenstein, the Assistant Medical Director for Population Health and Faculty Wellbeing at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. In the article “Telehealth Growth Trends Highlight Emerging Risks,” the authors analyze FAIR Health claims data to track the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on use of telehealth services in the US. They comment on observed differences in the rate of growth for telehealth services depending on location (in urban vs. rural areas); geography (across four regions); and diagnosis (of different medical conditions, including behavioral and mental health).

The authors note that a better understanding of these trends will be important for policymakers and regulators who have been grappling with how to allow patients and payors to benefit from improved access to services made possible by telehealth, while ensuring that telehealth providers administer care in ways that are consistent with their professional duties of care and their contractual obligations to payors.
