Analysis Group Consultants Contribute Chapter on Data in Economic Analyses to Pharmaceutical Industry Antitrust Handbook

November 2, 2026

For the third edition of the Pharmaceutical Industry Antitrust Handbook, Managing Principals Stephen Fink, Andrée-Anne Fournier, and Maria Garibotti and Vice Presidents Benjamin March, Christopher Ody, and Erica VanSant coauthored a chapter on how economists use pharmaceutical industry data to analyze competition and address key issues in antitrust litigation. In “Economists’ Use of Data in Pharmaceutical Antitrust Cases,” the authors examine the analytical challenges posed by the industry’s complex structure and the potential applications of various data sources in assessing market definition, market power, class certification, and damages.

The chapter describes a range of data sources available to economists studying competition in the pharmaceutical industry, including regulatory data, pricing and sales data, insurance claims, and information on prescribing patterns, marketing, and clinical outcomes. Using examples from economic research and antitrust litigation, the authors illustrate how these data can be used to evaluate competitive dynamics and the effects of changes in the pharmaceutical marketplace. They also discuss the strengths and limitations of individual data sources, emphasizing the value of combining complementary information to develop a more complete understanding of pharmaceutical competition.
