Summary of Experience
Dr. Cole specializes in the analysis and application of cybersecurity, computer networking, and digital infrastructure in matters involving data privacy, software vulnerabilities, and cyber risk. His litigation and advisory experience includes extensive expert witness work in federal and state courts, inter partes review before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and matters before the United States International Trade Commission. He has provided expert testimony in more than 100 cases involving data breaches, trade secret misappropriation, system intrusions, and patent infringement. Dr. Cole has authored several books on cybersecurity, including the bestselling Cyber Crisis: Protecting Your Business from Real Threats in the Virtual World, and he has published widely on insider threats, advanced persistent threats, steganography, and network security. Previously, he served as chief scientist at Lockheed Martin, as CTO of The Sytex Group, and in senior security roles at McAfee, GraceIC, and the Central Intelligence Agency. Dr. Cole also served as cybersecurity commissioner for multiple presidents and as dean of faculty at the SANS Technology Institute. He is a senior fellow at SANS, sits on the Purdue University Executive Advisory Board, and holds the Certified Information Systems Security Professional credential. Dr. Cole was inducted into the Information Security Hall of Fame and received the Cyberspace Wingman Award from the US Air Force. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Information Systems Security Association.
