Summary of Experience

Dr. Welsh specializes in the development and scale-up of advanced manufacturing and photonic systems, with a focus on MEMS-based optical switching technologies and high-reliability semiconductor fabrication. He has more than two decades of experience in operations strategy, supply chain management, and high-volume production optimization in the semiconductor and optical networking industries. Dr. Welsh’s research and development work has contributed to advances in photolithographic processing and magnetoresistive device fabrication. He holds 13 US patents in photolithography and magnetic recording head design and has published more than a dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals. At Calient Technologies, Dr. Welsh built and scaled global manufacturing capabilities for the firm’s flagship optical circuit switch product line and has led offshore production transitions, Asia-focused operations restructuring, and in-house MEMS foundry optimization. Previously, Dr. Welsh held senior engineering positions at Applied Magnetics Corporation, where he led photolithography and wafer-level engineering for magnetic recording heads, and Seagate Technology, where he managed the development of photolithographic processes for new recording head designs. He began his career as an advisory engineer at IBM’s semiconductor research and development center. Dr. Welsh is a member of several electronics manufacturing professional organizations.
