Summary of Experience
Professor DeStefano is an applied economist with expertise in digital technology, AI, industrial robotics, firm productivity, and trade. His research explores how digital technologies shape firm reorganization and performance, drawing on a combination of field experiments and observational data. In collaboration with businesses, he also provides strategy advice and conducts experiments that measure the causal impact of AI on firm performance. Professor DeStefano has extensive experience assessing policy interventions for European and Asian Pacific governments on a range of economic outcomes at the regional, firm, and individual levels. He was a research scientist at the Laboratory for Innovation Science at Harvard, where he led a team to establish a new lab research area on data science and AI. Professor DeStefano’s research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Development Economics, The Review of Economics and Statistics, and the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. He has received research grants from the Australian government and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
