Pro Bono – ACLU of LA Justice Lab
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Louisiana Justice Lab partnered with an Analysis Group pro bono team to create an interactive map of Louisiana’s police violence, illustrating patterns of racial disparity in on-duty police killings of Black people between 2013 and 2020. The ACLU found, for example, that Black people accounted for more than half of police killings in the state, even though Black people were only one-third of its population. The map enables users to visually filter the data by race, parish, whether the victim was unarmed in the killing, and other factors.
The Analysis Group team, led by Managing Principals Jee-Yeon Lehmann and Kenneth Weinstein and including Manager Marisa Carlos, Senior Analysts Natalie Bina and Angelina Li, and Analyst Katherine Gaburo, analyzed the data and prepared the interactive visualization. The data were collected from a variety of sources, including media reports, the US Census, the FBI, and the group Mapping Police Violence.
