Ignite@AG Externship

Discover a Career in Economic Consulting with AG’s Externship for Advanced Degree Candidates

The Analysis Group Ignite@AG Externship for advanced-degree candidates is an immersive, four-day summer experience designed for incoming M.B.A. students and current Ph.D. students who are one to two years away from their expected graduation and are interested in exploring a career in economic consulting. This program provides hands-on exposure to the associate role (the entry position for new M.B.A. and Ph.D. recipients) within a collaborative, analytics-focused environment.

About the Program

Hosted in person at Analysis Group’s Boston office each summer, this externship offers a comprehensive introduction to the associate role at Analysis Group. All travel, accommodations, and meals are covered by Analysis Group. There is no cost to participate. Participants will:

  • Experience life as an associate, gaining insight into the consulting process from start to finish
  • Work through a mock case that mirrors real client engagements
  • Shadow an associate to see how analytical and collaborative skills are applied day to day
  • Receive interview coaching and career guidance from current consultants
  • Learn from leading experts in economics, finance, and related fields
  • Build a lasting professional network through engagement with our affinity groups, open to all employees, such as Black@AG and Latins@AG, to learn about AG’s inclusive culture

Who Should Apply

The program is open to all applicants, with a focus on providing opportunities to individuals who have not had prior exposure to economic consulting.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently accepted into a US-based, full-time M.B.A. program or currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. (Please see the required expected graduation years below.) A concentration in economics, finance, computer science, or general business is preferred.

  • Availability for the full four-day, in-person program during the summer. Please see the program dates below.

Application and Recruiting Process

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The full process includes a single 45-minute virtual interview during which you will be asked questions about your experiences and qualifications. We will inform you of an interview decision three weeks after your application submission. To be considered, we ask that you submit:

  • Resume
  • Statement of Interest: Please describe your interest in Ignite@AG, what you hope to gain from the experience, and any relevant background or academic interests. You may also include your preliminary geographic preference for office placement.
  • Reflection on Access and Inclusion
As part of your application, we invite you to reflect on two areas:
    1. 1. Access and growth for yourself – How Ignite@AG represents an opportunity for you to explore economic consulting. You might consider sharing how your academic, professional, or personal experiences have shaped your curiosity about the field, your prior exposure – or lack thereof – to the field of economic consulting, and the reasons why participating in this program would be an opportunity for growth at this stage of your journey.
    2. 2. Access and growth for others – How you have contributed to creating access, fostering growth and inclusion, or building belonging for others within the teams, organizations, or communities in which you have participated.
You are welcome to respond in whatever way feels most authentic, or you may use prompts such as:
    •  Have you faced challenges in accessing opportunities in fields such as economic consulting or related areas? How have you navigated any of those barriers?
    • Share an experience in which you worked with people who had different perspectives than yours. What did you learn?
    • How have you helped to open doors or create opportunities for others in academic, professional, or community settings?
    • Describe a time when you worked to make a team or organization more inclusive. What actions did you take and what was the impact?

What is the difference between management consulting and economic consulting?

The main difference between management consulting and economic consulting is the focus and approach to problem-solving. Management consulting is often focused on helping businesses improve their operations and strategy, with a forward-looking focus on business growth or efficiency. In contrast, economic consulting applies rigorous qualitative and quantitative analysis to answer complex questions related to legal disputes, regulatory matters, and public policy discussions. While management consultants may deliver strategic recommendations and operational improvements, economic consultants produce detailed analyses, expert reports, and courtroom testimony based on academic and industry research, data, and modeling. If you're drawn to solving analytical challenges, collaborating with academic and industry experts, and influencing high-stakes decisions through economic insight, economic consulting offers a unique and rewarding career path.
