Discover a Career in Economic Consulting with AG’s Externship for Ph.D. Candidates

The Analysis Group Ignite@AG Externship is an immersive, four-day summer experience designed for current Ph.D. students who are one to two years away from their expected graduation, and are interested in exploring a career in economic consulting. This program provides hands-on exposure to the internship and full-time associate roles within a collaborative, analytics-focused environment.

About the Program

Hosted in person at Analysis Group’s Boston office each summer, this externship offers a comprehensive introduction to the associate role at Analysis Group. All travel, accommodations, and meals are covered by Analysis Group. There is no cost to participate. Participants will:

• Experience life as an associate, gaining insight into the consulting process from start to finish
• Work through a mock case that mirrors real client engagements
• Shadow an associate to see how analytical and collaborative skills are applied day to day
• Receive interview coaching and career guidance from current consultants and recruiters
• Learn from leading experts across our practice areas
• Build a lasting professional network through engagement with our affinity groups, open to all employees, such as Black@AG and Latins@AG, to learn about AG’s inclusive culture
  
  

Who Should Apply

The program is open to all applicants, with a focus on providing opportunities to individuals who have not had prior exposure to economic consulting.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. (Please see the required expected graduation years below.) A concentration in economics, finance, computer science, or general business is preferred.
• Strong quantitative and research skills, including analytical and creative problem-solving abilities; familiarity with AI tools; the ability to apply targeted research to address client challenges; intellectual curiosity with a strong desire to continuously learn; and the ability to anticipate and respond effectively to opposing arguments.
• Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and concisely.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work independently and within a team setting.
• A strong academic track record, with demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills, and a commitment to producing high-quality work. 
• Comfort with at least one analytical programming language (e.g., R, Python, Stata, SAS).
• An inclusive and growth-oriented mindset, strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work across differences.

Application and Recruiting Process

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The full process includes a single 45-minute virtual interview during which you will be asked questions about your experiences and qualifications. We will review your application within three weeks of submission and inform you of a decision shortly after that. To be considered, we ask that you submit:

  • Access and growth for yourself: How Ignite@AG would provide an opportunity for you to explore economic consulting and grow at this stage of your academic or professional journey. You may consider your prior exposure to the field, experiences that have shaped your interest, or challenges you have faced in accessing similar opportunities.
  • Access and growth for others: How you have helped create access, foster inclusion or belonging, or support the growth of others within your academic, professional, or community experiences. Consider sharing a specific example and the impact of your actions.
  • You may also indicate your preliminary geographic preference for a future internship or full-time role with AG. This preference is non-binding, and you will have an opportunity to reassess it after completing the program and before formally applying.

• Program Dates: Monday, August 16–Thursday, August 19, 2027
• Location: Boston, MA
• Cost: Free for all externs (travel, lodging, and meals included)
• Graduation Years: Applicants must expect to graduate in either 2028 or 2029
• Application Period: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis from March 1 to May 28, 2027
